Survivor Training Programme

“I now have the confidence and understanding to shake the shame and embarrassment of what happened to us.”

SAHWR are in the process of designing and developing our own Survivor Training programme.

We plan to deliver a range of community based workshops and courses designed to support survivors of domestic abuse. We hope to launch the programme and start delivery in October 2025.

Survivor Training Programme - Heart Hands

We currently deliver the Safer Places 12-week specialist Domestic Abuse Triple R training courses to survivors living within our Safe Accommodation.

This is a specialist, accredited programme which has three key aims:

  1. To enable survivors to Recognise the abuse and its impacts on them and their children.

  2. To enable survivors to Recover from the abuse and support their children to do so.

  3. To develop Resilience by building on their strengths and addressing challenges to build a better, sustainable and safe future for themselves and their families.

The programme is delivered using 4 modules:

  • Recognition: Helping survivors to understand and recognise different forms of abuse and the cycle of abuse.

  • Recovery: Providing survivors with a better understanding of:

    • the psychology of abuse,

    • information on the short and long-term effects of abuse,

    • the impacts of leaving a relationship or their home,

    • understanding how their experiences will impact on their own identity and self-esteem.

  • Children: Introducing values and parenting skills designed to help understand the effects of abuse on children and how to communicate with children about abuse. The main focus is keeping children safe in the future.

  • Resilience: Building resilience and coping strategies. This includes understanding physical/emotional risk and safety, learning how to move on and bounce back.
