SAHWR response to under 16’s social media ban

SAHWR’s response to the proposed social media ban for under 16’s

On Monday 15th June, the government announced plans to introduce a ban on under-16s accessing major social media platforms. These changes are due to happen in spring 2027.

Whilst we recognise that there is a need for tighter restrictions and stronger protections, there is a space for social media and the balance between the two is what needs attention.

For children who have experienced domestic abuse, access to social media can provide a safe space, a place where they can connect and even seek support.

We hear first hand from young people the positive impact of social media, even as a source of learning. The complete ban ignores their views.

At SAHWR, we would like to see improvements to the management and monitoring of the platforms and greater restrictions on graphic content.

We will await further guidance and hope that there will be tighter restrictions on all platforms.
